Grimsby Community Energy Wins Environmental Award at 2026 Civic Awards
Grimsby Community Energy has been recognised with the Environmental Award at the 2026 Civic Awards, celebrating the work taking place across North East Lincolnshire to support local communities and the environment.
The awards, hosted by North East Lincolnshire Council at Grimsby Town Hall, brought together individuals and organisations from across the borough, all contributing in different ways to making a positive local impact.
Now in their fifth year, the Civic Awards are designed to shine a light on the often unseen efforts of people and organisations working quietly behind the scenes. With more than 100 nominations this year, the evening was a strong reminder of the depth of commitment and care within our communities.
The Environmental Award recognises initiatives that protect and enhance the local environment, promote sustainable practices, and deliver measurable change. For Grimsby Community Energy, it reflects over a decade of work developing community-owned renewable energy projects across the area.
Since being established in 2014, we have installed and now operate solar PV systems on a growing number of local buildings, helping organisations access cheaper, greener electricity while keeping the financial benefits within the community. By summer 2026, our total solar capacity will exceed 1MW.
Alongside our generation projects, we have supported local organisations, hosted student placements, and continued to build partnerships that strengthen the role of community energy in Grimsby. More recently, we have been developing new projects focused on tackling fuel poverty and ensuring that the transition to clean energy delivers practical benefits for local people.
This award is not just about our organisation. It reflects the collective effort of partners, host sites, supporters, and the wider community who have helped make these projects possible.
We were proud to be recognised alongside so many other inspiring winners and nominees, each playing a role in improving life across North East Lincolnshire.
As we look ahead, there is still much more to do. We will continue to grow our work, develop new projects, and ensure that community energy remains rooted in local needs, local ownership, and long-term benefit.
